HR: Isn't Your Job Really to Manage Your Company's Salary Cap?

I could make a case that the best way for you to add value is to find talent that can give 85% of the performance at 60% of the cost, right?

That would make me a total ##$#% in the eyes of a lot of people.

I totally agree - the old age "we want a seat at the table argument" would easily be put to bed if we committed ourselves to understanding how to enable our companies to BEST spend their compensation or benefit dollars. This doesn't mean being cheap, but rather understanding from a business perspective how to differentially invest in employees to set the company up for success and then how to reward those employees who help us to achieve that success.
