SUPER BOWL TALENT NOTES: The Right Harbaugh Won the Game...

OK - you watched ther SuperBowl or were around it.  Eating.  Drinking. Being a consumer of 5 million dollar commercials.

Did you see who won? I don't mean the Ravens or the 49ers. Harbaugh

I mean John Harbaugh beat Jim Harbaugh. Ball Don't Lie. Good guys win.

John and Jim Harbaugh are brothers.  John's the calm one who thinks before he reacts. Jim's the loud one that explodes often. John's likable to almost everyone but Steeler and Patriot fans.  He could have been a lawyer or a teacher.

Jim's the loud one. The combustive one. The one you only like if he's a part of your program.

Both probably have the same coaching skills - raised by a coach, same food, same shelter.

John's the guy you hire and he's around for a long time. Jim's the guy you hire to win and he's got a shelf life of about 5 years, at which time your organization probably gets sick of him and during the first downturn, there's a mutual parting of ways.

Jim's the guy you hire to come in and turnaround an organization through force. John's the guy you hire and hope he stays forever.

I'd hire Jim Harbaugh in a heartbeat, but I'd know it would end with some flames after we won a bunch.

I'm glad John Harbaugh won on Sunday.

Stuff the Capitalist (aka KD) Likes: Fat Guy Dancing As Part of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones...

Who am I?  Who cares?  Good questions.  It's my site, so I'm going to tap into a Friday once in a awhile by telling you more about who I am - via a "Stuff I Like" series.  Nothing too serious, just exploring the micro-niche that resides at the base of all of our lives.  Potshots encouraged in the comments.

On my bucket list is to make it to a live show/small venue performance of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones.  While I like the sound of the MMBT form of rock/ska, what really drives me to want to see it is they're different from the normal alt rock scene.  I know, I know.  There's a bunch of bands like the MMBT, including Reel Big Fish, Mustard Plug, etc.  But the Bosstones seem to be the one that have made it the most commercially viable, and that's worth studying.

Another tie-in to what we do on the talent front relates to trying new things.  In any business, it's easy to go with the status quo of what your competitors are doing.  Take the template, put your logo on it.  Say the difference is your service.  What a lie.

One way the Bosstones are different is they've got a guy dancing on stage as part of the band.  He's not really fat, I was just yanking your chain as part of the headline.  Still not sure what I'm talking about?  Let me be clear.  There's 9-10 members of this band, and one is a guy who dances on stage the entire show - that's his role, to dance in a suit.  Check out the video below and then stay around for the analysis (email subscribers click through for the video):

So I showed Mrs. Capitalist this clip and said "isn't that great?"

I think she thought it was strange. I'm sure others do as well. I think it makes the MMBT interesting and engaging that they provide a guy dancing in a suit as part of their band.  If you watched the whole clip, someone's got the video going for the sole purpose of taping him.  They're surprised and delighted when he actually sings as well.  They're rooting for him.

The question - what is it about your company's brand (or your personal brand) that's different, memorable and engaging?

Most people aren't willing to take chances. I'm guessing most of the real winners do.

I think a lot of companies, work teams and individuals stuck in a professional rut need a dancing guy to reinvent themselves.

I'm KD, and I think a guy dancing with the Bosstones is wildly entertaining.  Not that there's anything wrong with that...
