Thankfully I have never experienced the loss of a parent or a child, but I can imagine that 3 days is not enough to process the grief in those situations of loss, let alone meeting with a lawyer (if needed), funeral home, planning a service, etc.

I hope that more companies recognize the importance of employees being emotionally fit for duty. Some employees can't afford to miss more than one or three days and don't have the vacation/PTO time to take more time off, so they come to work not ready or able to focus on their job. I work in the healthcare industry, and an employee who is not focused on their work can result in harm to the patient or employee, which costs the employer far more than a few extra days of the employee's pay.
