So, why don't people hate Michigan State and Izzo?
1. Sustained success - 6 final fours and 1 national title in 12 years.
2. Leader - Tons of articles praising Izzo for making yet another run to a Final Four year
3. Aggressive behavior - one can't go through a MSU telecast without an announcer mentioning the "War Drill" that keeps MSU among the top 5 in rebounding each year.
4. Media coverage - Every MSU game is televised. You had the Detroit thing in 2009. 7 different MSU moments in "One Shining Moment" this year.

It has to be number 5.

MSU is different.

TV coverage is different (especially for those outside of Big 10 territory). While I still get to suffer with Duke every week, MSU is typically running at the same time as a Pac 10 game.

Media coverage is different. Outside of Big 10 territory, I rarely read or hear anything about MSU.

Duke is covered and talked about on a national level. MSU isn't. That's what my west coast perspective is. I hear news about the Pac 10, Gonzaga and Duke/UNC.

I'd also argue that most of their players are system players who can dominate because most college programs aren't well rounded. When those players get in the NBA though, they generally lack the talent to achieve at a high level.

I know some purists love that but I'll take the up and down of a Cuse, MSU or even UNC over the Duke game if only because those programs deal with star level talent like NBA teams do.

I like how I live within spitting distance of Duke. Makes the spitting easier.

I really think people hate Duke not because of the players or Coach K. I think people hate Duke because they perceive the media is hyping up Duke way too much where there are other solid teams.

I will add as well, the 1992 Regional Final game between Kentucky and Duke was the turning point. Everyone knows Laettner's shot at the buzzer, but most don't know in the same game, Laettner stepped on a Kentucky player and believe got a technical or did nothing and that is where the Duke hate started because of the action and smugness.

In all honesty, people don't have issue with the program, they blame Dickie V (or Dukie V), ESPN, CBS, and others thinking Duke is the best school, which in reality they only won 4 titles in 20 years, not 8 or 9.

By the way, the only villain in college basketball now is John Calipari, not Coach K.

I wouldn’t be too surprised to see many of those users flock to the Netflix web site and order their free disk in the days ahead.

May your hate keep you warm in the winter of your career and help you raise your game.
