Here's a thought...

Are bonuses and other incentives paid monthly/quarterly/annually because the financial reporting system defaults to these time frames? My guess is - yep.

Not unlike the fact that railroad rails are spaced based on the width of a Roman chariot...google it - it's true.

I suggest in most of my client meetings that we forget the way things are currently reported through the financial system.

Worry about the goals and the behaviors. Technology is cheap enough today to create a tracking a reporting (and payout) system that ties to the program/initiative and not to an outmoded constraint that may actually limit your ability to create the BEST program.

Wow, I'm feeling baited by this one... more to come but first, personally speaking (n=1) I have reduced my efforts at work in response to an announcement by our CEO at a company-wide meeting in Nov that we would likely not meet budget for this fiscal year and therefore it would mean no bonuses (as opposed to cutting programs, staff, etc.)

Now, I wonder what the research says...
