Much if this still seems rooted in an old fashioned organization structure. I do have a fancy job title, much sought after as a Metaverse Evangelist.
This has impact and describes what I do. However I often have to explain to companies that the old tiered and locked down systems of control that those manager and director titles are linked to will not fit aswell in a dynamic and flowing enterprise 2.0.
We all lead, and sometimes manage over different networks at different times. Job titles showing that flexibility to operate and get the job done should be encouraged but maybe not asprational ones as they lead to control and politics IMHO.

At a past employer, I found myself on the short end of a title standardization campaign. In this case the campaign was also done in conjunction with an initiative to impose salary bands throughout the organization. It was a lethal combination.

After the changes shook out, virtually everyone I knew was made to feel as though they were already at the very top or above the top of their new salary band, even though ironically they'd just been dinged a title level or two.

As it so happens, the standardization committee was sitting in the corporate office 2000 miles away. They had never spoken with my boss, much less me, about what I actually did in my job. I was told that in my case a title bump (back to my old title) required CEO approval and that the CEO only reviews such cases twice per year.

I was happily employed elsewhere before the next cycle had time to come around.

Interesting idea, but... I'm a Project Manager. Where do I fit?
