I am so out of touch and need to learn more about social networking - seems like so much untapped potential out there for the taking.

Natalie Cooper

This is an interesting post as I'd recently been talking to director Peter Thomson (faculty of Henley Management College) of the Future Work Forum.

Not only could social networking sites such as Facebook revolutionise the way employers and HR recruit candidates but it will also shape the way we will all work together in future.

Peter goes a few steps further by arguing the point that in future we could be operating with colleagues in a virtual world where we use social networking sites to brainstorm, share knowledge or hold regular meetings using skype and dial in to webinars.

Facebook started out as an online destination to have "fun" and where people share pictures from their personal life which could include a nite at a club - won't this hurt a candidate's chances of landing a job? Will HR/ recruiters be able to separate and look who John Smith is 9 - 5 vs. 5 - 9?

Kris

Natalie -

Agree with your points - it's going to be a very different world, with incremental change from this point out. We're currently seeing a new generation of workers and candidates that would rather text than talk!

Dave - My two cents, I think you are going to see a migration of use regarding properties like Facebook. I think as more corporate types use it for professional community, the "here's my pics from the party" crowd will find a niche site dedicated to the personal side only. I think that's already happening with facebook courting more corporate traffic.

As far as HR and recruiters being able to separate the personal from professional, no way. We're human, so its all discoverable!! Candidates should treat it as such...

Thanks for the interaction...
