Kris, we just transitioned away from a 2 level Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory system (thankfully!)to a 5 level system - unsat, minimally sat, fully sat, exceptional, outstanding. Although I personally would prefer the 3 level there just is no way around the tough conversations and certain managers will always find a way to avoid the uncomfortable.

We are required by the Master Agreement to define "Expectional" performance and many supervisors, myself included, are working through this. For me, I know it when I see it and I am struggling with defining it for my professional, exempt staff so they can flat out get it. Keep up the posts on this topic.
