Here's a well known fact - we all like to peer in the lives of others. Whether we are wondering what it
would be like to be Warren Buffett (interesting) or wondering when the next career break will happen for K-Fed (seen at right, hide your interest in this like the fact you watch "The View" on your TiVo, trust me), it's always fun to see how others are living and compare and contrast with your own life.
Why should recruiting be any different? CareerXroads recently wrapped their 5th annual "Sources of Hire" survey (see the entire whitepaper here), which represents 40 large employers that filled 188,000 positions in 2006. Here's the breakdown regarding sources of hire across these filled positions:
>32% of all positions were filled by internal promotion and transfer;
>Of the positions filled externally, here's the breakdown of sources:
Sources of Hire (as a % of External Hires only)
As a smaller employer, here are my takes. First up, hard to believe that print ads went up in today's culture. Additionally, I would love to see a breakout of the Social Networking sites (LinkedIn, Jobster, etc.) that pitch passive candidates as such a strong source. Finally, the old Company Website category is suspect at best, our site has all the tags to ID the source, and many candidates get confused and list Company Website as their source regardless of where they started, because that is where they end up! So, that's almost assuredly over-reported.
Regardless, interesting data and worth the read....
